Greenville native, Zachary Lansdowne, was an early aviation pioneer in the US Navy. He was the commander of the USS Shenandoah (Daughter of the Stars) rigid airship that crashed near Ava, Ohio in 1925. Lansdowne and thirteen members of his crew perished in the crash.
