Beginning a Search
Collecting vital records is an important first step in geneology research. There are primary and secondary sources of information. Primary sources are those documented shortly after the original event by someone with first-hand knowledge. Secondary sources provide clues for further research.
Lecture on Black Settlement
Longtown was a settlement that was famous for its school and as a stop on the Underground Railroad. The Union Literary Institute was founded by anti-slavery Quakers along with free Blacks who lived near the Negro settlement of Longtown. The school welcomed all races. Come to hear about this little known, but important, part of history. February 22, at 2:30 PM. Admission is free.
